Periodontology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the periodontium (i.e. tissues supporting the teeth – eg. gums).
Tooth loosening, exposed tooth necks, bleeding gums and their inflammation as well as hypersensitivity to cold and heat and an unpleasant smell from the mouth, are often the first symptoms of periodontitis (periodontal disease). The treatment in periodontology is carried out by instructions of proper oral hygiene and adjustment of hygiene means, as well as thorough removal of all hard and soft dental plaque and calculus. Periodontal procedures also include curettage, flap treatment, aesthetic covering of gum recessions and regenerative treatments with bone substitutes.
